ASSIGNMENT 3 Part A: CONCEPT CLUSTER CONFERENCE (CCC)
(revised Dec 2010. Items in italics are slight revisions from the assignment given in the course of study)
1. Quiz
· 5 multiple choice questions
· 10 short answer questions
(All questions should be classified according to the achievement chart categories)

2. Concept Cluster Presentation 30-40 min
(a) Overview of the big ideas and overall expectations of the unit and how they guide the direction of the unit
(b) Introduction to the sequencing the key concepts of the unit [show how the concepts are connected or interconnected. This could be done as a flow chart or concept cluster or map.
Explain the links between concepts. For example, why is it necessary to introduce concept X before concept Y]
· Hook/demonstration
· Describe potential difficulties students might have
· Identify useful resources, activities and demonstrations for teaching the concepts
· Illustrate effective teaching strategies (why are they effective?)

3. Interactive, Hand-on Resources Workshop 20 -30 minutes (may be longer) Consists of five hands-on activities should be included to illustrate important expectations for the concept cluster. The activities may include wet and dry labs, simulations and the use of at least one technology (i.e. Smartboard, , Internet resources,e.g., Gizmos). The activities will be setup as standalone stations around the room. Class participants will visit each station for about five minutes and conduct the activities.
· Note that the use of probeware is not a requirement
· These materials have to be set up and have related instructions accompanying each station

4. Wrap-up.
The presentation should conclude with a wrap-up which might include peer reactions, Q & A, final tips etc.
5. A CCC Handout is to be prepared (maximum 8 - 10 single-spaced typed pages) and posted by Feb 25 to the Wiki. Paper copies are not required.
  • The cover page of the handout should consist of: Unit Title, Authors, Responsibilities (e.g., quiz developed by Fred, Carousel stations – group effort)
  • concept cluster or map
  • demonstration instructions and description (including safety issues, materials needed, set-up and questions to ask during the demo)
· student difficulties (misconceptions) and teaching strategies to address these difficulties
· applications and societal issues/implications
· annotated references (3 to 5)
· instructions / worksheets for all activities (student and teacher key if appropriate).
